The liner protrusion gauge measures how far the top of the liner stands above the block deck. Protrusion out of specification causes head gasket failure, coolant leaks and liner seat movement, so it is measured on every rebuild.

How to use a cylinder liner protrusion gauge

  1. Fit the new liner with its shims and O-rings into a clean bore.
  2. Place the gauge across the block deck over the liner flange.
  3. Measure the protrusion with a dial indicator or feeler gauge at four points.
  4. Compare the readings with the engine specification (commonly 0.02-0.12 mm).
  5. Adjust with liner shims until all four readings match.
